Life Update 2021

It's currently May 2026 but the below post was sitting in my drafts so thought I'd post it anyway!


Just logged on for the first time in about 2 years (life just got in the way I guess) and the first thing I noticed was my "About Me" section:-

"I'm Gillian and I live in Dundee with my Fiance Shaun. We like to travel a lot although this year we're toning it down a little because we're saving up to buy a house (eek, exciting!) so we only have a couple of trips planned this year. Hopefully new house by 2019, married in 2020, and might be able to squeeze a bit more travelling in before our family expands!"

So things haven't quite turned out as planned, for obvious reasons (thank you Covid). However, in December 2020 we did move into our lovely new house!


I suppose we have one thing to thank Covid for, and that's the fact that because of the travel restrictions, we managed to save up a lot quicker for our house than we thought!

The absolute worst part of going on holiday is when you have a stupidly early flight, although it does mean you get to spend the rest of the day at your destination!  Our flight from Edinburgh to Barcelona El Prat Airport was at 6.30am which meant a 4am wake up for us! The flight was pretty non-eventful, but annoyingly, the luggage belt at the other end didn’t start for a good 30-40 mins after landing which made us worry because we only had a one hour window to collect our rental car.  As it happened that wasn’t a problem because when we got to the car rental desk there was a bit of a queue! Alton Towers - Has the Magic Finally Ended?

Shaun and I have teamed up to write this post, first explaining how much Alton Towers has changed over the years and then giving you some tips on how to make the most of your day there. Alton Towers' slogan used to be "Where the Magic Never Ends", but if this year is anything to go by, the magic has almost completely died. There was a time when upon entering Alton Towers you just knew you were going to have a good day. You were welcomed with open arms. There was free parking, free entertainment and shows, high street fast food brands with high street pricing, happy staff and of course the UK’s best rollercoasters and innovative selection of rides and experiences. Five Sisters Zoo

A patient Kookaburra in the bird walkthrough One of our my favourite things to do is to visit zoos and wildlife centres, and one of my favourites in Scotland has to be the wonderful Five Sisters Zoo which is situated just outside Polbeth, West Calder. They look after over 190 species of animals, birds and reptiles, some of which have been rescued from horrible circumstances. Lions and Tigers* and Bears (Oh My!) *Ok just lions and bears The zoo acquired two 3 year old bears 🐻🐻 (Henk and Eso) on 5 May 2018 from the International Animal Rescue Centre – Natuurhulpcentrum in Belgium who had rescued them from a terrible existence as an "attraction" at a roadside restaurant in Albania. The bears are thought to be victims of illegal poaching and taken from the wild after their mother was killed, sold to the tourist trade and somehow ended up at the restaurant in a cage that was far too small for them, where the only water they had were from puddles of rainwater ...
